Welcome and Ahlan wa Sahlan to the Modern Arab Woman blog!
This is a digital-era gathering place where knowledge and ideas are shared to cultivate empowered thinking and choices for women of all ages who share a passion for self-development, reaching their highest potential, and breaking through barriers to reach their goals.
To me, this blog is more than a project, it’s calling, and is born out of many years of working as a lawyer, researching personal status laws and most importantly, life experience as an Arab-American woman finding her way in the USA, Germany and the Middle East.
I tend to get excited about news headlines that celebrate the first all-Arab women piloted plane, or first minister of state, etc. Like me, you’ve probably asked how did these exceptional women break the mold? What techniques did they draw upon? What spiritual, cultural, and decision-making tools did they use to propel themselves to the highest heights, even if it meant ruffling feathers or overcoming fear, and going through powerful emotions to get there!
All too often, the topics of equality, independence, patriarchy and emancipation of Arab women remain imbued with taboo, and entering into the discourse can be a quagmire. But these topics represent real challenges that exist, and until we raise awareness about them, a tremendous amount of women’s potential will remain untapped, unrealized, and unfulfilled.
Here’s to celebrating women’s empowerment and striving to tap our best resources, realize our goals and fulfill our potential!
In future posts, we will explore together politics, culture, and human experience in an era of disruption, digitalization, environmental and geo-political crisis, and eroding social bonds. The ultimate question is: How can women become more empowered to surmount these challenges and achieve their highest potential?
Seeing women succeed is what makes my cup runneth over! I invite you to explore with me what it takes to live as an authentic, empowered, modern Arab woman today.
I too was struggling to come to terms with dichotomies between the traditional and the modern. I realized there were other women like me, and there was a need for women role models to speak directly to other Arab women about how they overcame societal barriers, conscious and unconscious bias, glass ceilings, internalized norms, and codified laws.
My forthcoming book The Modern Arab Woman’s Guide to Life draws on experiences from my own personal journey of finding my way in the modern world having been raised within traditional Arab cultural constructs. My greatest joy would be for other women to be well-informed and have gained the confidence to assert their own positive changes in a way to suit their own individual needs.
Stay tuned here to explore:
- Awareness-raising of the inherent power and strength women can draw upon to find solutions to life’s issues
- Confidence-building to inspire women to recognize that their traditional cultural background is a resource upon which they can draw upon in the modern world
- Finding the strength from which to leap to the take the next big step
- Recognizing that others are dealing with the same issues and overcome the feeling of isolation
- Potential strategies for how to overcome obstacles from the real-life examples of someone who has been in your shoes.
Join me as we take a journey through life’s milestones and examine the outcomes and effects of the application of traditional norms in the modern day. I aspire to see more empowered modern Arab women take control of their destiny and reach their highest goals.
